In short: Work backward from your departure time. TSA's advice for New York–area airports is to arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one. Subtract the drive (from Princeton, usually around 50–65 minutes to Newark, 65–85 to Philadelphia and 85–110 to JFK without heavy traffic), then subtract a traffic cushion that grows at rush hour and before holidays. The result is your pickup time.

How early to leave for the airport is one of the most practical questions for travelers in Princeton, Trenton and the towns around them. Mercer County sits between five airports with very different drives: Trenton-Mercer is minutes away, Newark and Philadelphia are roughly an hour, and JFK and LaGuardia sit on the far side of New York City. This guide gives you a formula, the drive times for your town and three worked examples.

How early to leave: the pickup-time formula

Pickup time = departure time − time at the airport − drive time − traffic cushion.

  • Time at the airport. TSA's New York–area advisory says at least two hours for domestic flights and three for international flights. TSA's traveler FAQ also suggests checking with your airline, because times vary by airport and date.
  • Drive time. Use the table below. These are road times without heavy traffic.
  • Traffic cushion. Extra time you choose to protect against congestion, weather and incidents. A reasonable starting point is around 20–30 minutes in quiet hours, 45–60 minutes in weekday rush hours or on Friday afternoons, and an hour or more before holidays or in bad weather.

Drive times from Mercer County to each airport

Distances are by road; times are usual ranges without heavy traffic. Use them as the "drive time" in the formula, then add your cushion.

Two things stand out. First, Newark and Philadelphia are close to even from Lawrenceville, Hamilton and Robbinsville, so the flight schedule, not the drive, should decide between them. Second, JFK and LaGuardia add roughly 40 minutes of road time over Newark from every town in the table, before any New York City traffic, which is why they need the earliest pickups.

Time of day matters more than miles

A 50-mile drive can be the easiest part of your trip or the hardest, depending on when you leave, so how early to leave for the airport depends on the clock as much as the map. Three patterns to plan around:

Early morning

Pre-dawn pickups for first-wave flights usually meet the lightest roads. Security lines can still be long at that hour, so keep your full airport time.

Weekday rush hours

The New Jersey Turnpike and the approaches to Newark and New York slow down in the morning and late-afternoon commutes. These windows deserve the biggest cushion.

Fridays and holidays

Friday afternoons, holiday getaway days and big events near the Turnpike add traffic in both directions. Plan as if it will be slow, and enjoy it if it is not.

Airport-by-airport notes

Newark Liberty (EWR)

The nearest major airport for Princeton, West Windsor and East Windsor by drive time, reached on the New Jersey Turnpike. Newark has three terminals, so check yours before you set the pickup. Our Newark airport pickup guide covers arrivals, and the Newark airport car service page covers departures.

Philadelphia International (PHL)

Closer than Newark by drive time from Trenton, Ewing and Pennington. Once you are through security at PHL, you can walk between terminals without being screened again, and checkpoint opening hours differ by terminal, as the airport's checkpoint hours page shows. See our Philadelphia airport car service, or compare the two hubs in our PHL vs Newark guide.

JFK and LaGuardia

The longest drives from Mercer County, and the ones most exposed to bridge, tunnel and expressway traffic in New York City. Give them the largest cushion. Read our Princeton to JFK comparison, or see JFK and LaGuardia car service.

Trenton-Mercer (TTN)

A county-owned airport in the West Trenton section of Ewing Township, a short drive from most of Mercer County. The road time is small, so the airport time drives your plan; follow your airline's check-in guidance. Details are on our Trenton-Mercer airport car service page.

Three worked examples

  1. Princeton to Newark, 8:00 a.m. domestic flight. Be at the airport by 6:00 a.m. The drive is usually 50–65 minutes, and an early-morning cushion of 20–30 minutes gives a pickup between about 4:25 and 4:50 a.m. A 4:30 a.m. pickup is a sensible choice.
  2. Hamilton to Philadelphia, 5:30 p.m. international flight on a weekday. Be at the airport by 2:30 p.m. The drive is usually 60–75 minutes, and with a weekday-afternoon cushion of 45–60 minutes, plan a pickup between about 12:15 and 12:45 p.m.
  3. Trenton to JFK, 10:00 p.m. international flight on a Friday. Be at the airport by 7:00 p.m. The drive is usually 95–120 minutes, and a Friday cushion of 60–90 minutes puts the pickup between about 3:30 and 4:25 p.m. On a holiday weekend, lean toward the earlier end.

What adds time at the airport

  • Checking bags, especially oversized items such as golf clubs or car seats
  • International travel, with document checks at the counter
  • Wheelchair or mobility assistance, which Newark's airport site advises arranging in advance through your airline
  • Young children, strollers and car seats
  • Holiday peaks and the first flights of the morning
  • Not having expedited screening such as TSA PreCheck

Coming home is easier to time: we monitor your flight, so your chauffeur adjusts to the actual landing time, with meet & greet available on request. You only need to send your flight number when you book and a text when you have your bags.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I leave Princeton for a Newark Airport flight?

Newark is about 40 miles from Princeton, usually around 50–65 minutes without heavy traffic. TSA advises arriving at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one at New York-area airports. For an 8 a.m. domestic flight, a pickup around 4:30 a.m. is a sensible plan; during weekday rush hours, allow a bigger traffic cushion.

How long does it take to drive from Trenton to Philadelphia Airport?

Philadelphia International is about 43 miles from Trenton by road, usually around 55–70 minutes without heavy traffic. The trip crosses into Pennsylvania, and traffic on I-95 through Philadelphia can add a lot at rush hour or when there is an incident, so add a cushion and check live conditions before you set your pickup time.

Is two hours at the airport enough?

For many domestic flights, two hours is TSA's suggested minimum at New York-area airports, and three hours for international flights. Airlines set their own check-in and bag-drop deadlines, and TSA encourages travelers to check with their airline because the right time varies by airport and travel date. Allow more for holidays, checked bags or travel with young children.

How early should I leave Mercer County for a JFK flight?

JFK is about 65 to 77 miles from most Mercer County towns, usually around 80–125 minutes without heavy traffic, and the drive crosses New York City. For an international departure, add three hours at the airport and a traffic cushion of an hour or more, so leaving about five and a half to six hours before departure is a reasonable starting point.

Do I need to arrive two hours early at Trenton-Mercer Airport?

Trenton-Mercer is a small airport, but TSA screening and airline check-in deadlines still apply. TSA suggests checking with your airline, since recommended times vary by airport and date. The drive is short, about 13 miles from Princeton and 6 from Trenton, so most of your planning time is at the airport rather than on the road.

What is the worst time to drive to Newark Airport from Mercer County?

Weekday morning and late-afternoon commutes, Friday afternoons and holiday getaway days are when the New Jersey Turnpike toward Newark is most likely to slow down. Bad weather and incidents can affect any hour. Check live traffic on 511NJ before you set your pickup time, and give those windows the largest cushion.
