What happens between touchdown at Newark Liberty (EWR) and the moment you are on the Turnpike heading home to Princeton, Trenton or Hamilton.

  • Terminals A, B and C
  • Meet inside or at the curb
  • Drive times to Mercer County

In short: A Newark airport pickup goes smoothly when your chauffeur has your flight number before you fly. We monitor the landing, you send a text once you have your bags, and your chauffeur meets you inside near baggage claim (meet & greet on request) or pulls up at the arrivals curb of Terminal A, B or C. From EWR, Princeton is about 40 miles away, usually around 50–65 minutes without heavy traffic.

Newark Liberty International is the nearest major airport for much of Mercer County, and it is a busy one: three separate terminals, strict curb rules and a lot of people arriving at once. This guide walks through how a pre-arranged EWR pickup actually works, where to meet your driver, what changes after an international flight and how long the ride home usually takes.

If you already know you want a car waiting when you land, our Newark airport car service page explains what each ride includes and which vehicles fit your group.

How a Newark airport pickup works, step by step

  1. Book with your flight details. Send your airline, flight number, arrival date, number of passengers and number of bags through the online booking request. Your written quote lists the vehicle, the rate and any tolls, parking, airport fees and gratuity before you confirm.
  2. We monitor your flight. Your chauffeur follows the live arrival time, so an early landing or a late one does not leave you standing outside. Wait-time terms are stated in your quote.
  3. Turn your phone on after landing. Send a short text when you reach the gate, then a second one when you have your checked bags. Those two messages do most of the coordination.
  4. Meet your chauffeur. With meet & greet, your chauffeur waits inside the arrivals area with your name. With a curbside pickup, you step out to the arrivals curb and the car comes to you.
  5. Load up and head home. Your chauffeur handles the luggage, confirms the drop-off address and any stop on the way, and heads south, usually on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Terminals A, B and C: what matters for an EWR pickup

Newark has three passenger terminals, Terminals A, B and C, and each has its own arrivals area, baggage claim and curb. Airlines can move between terminals, so check the terminal on your boarding pass or airline app on the day you fly, and include it in your first text to your chauffeur.

The terminals are linked by AirTrain Newark, which also serves parking, rental cars and the Newark Liberty International Airport train station. The Port Authority's AirTrain page notes that rides between terminals are free and that AirTrain does not stop directly at Terminal A, the newest terminal. From the nearest stop it is about a 15-minute covered walk or a 5-minute shuttle ride.

None of that matters when a car is collecting you. Your chauffeur drives straight to the terminal you land at, so you never ride the AirTrain with your suitcases. It does matter if you arrive by rail instead. If you would rather take the train part of the way and be picked up at a station, see our train station car service.

Meet inside or meet at the curb?

Meet & greet near baggage claim

Available on request. Your chauffeur waits inside the arrivals area with a name sign, helps with bags from the carousel and walks you to the car. It suits first-time visitors, older relatives, families with car seats and strollers, and anyone landing late who would rather not search the curb for a car.

  • Easy to find each other in a crowded hall
  • Help with luggage from the carousel
  • A good choice for guests arriving from abroad

Curbside pickup

You collect your bags, text your chauffeur and walk out to the arrivals curb, where the car pulls up. It is quick for frequent travelers with carry-on bags who know the terminal and want to be moving within minutes of leaving the building.

  • Fast when you travel light
  • Works well for repeat business trips
  • Relies on a clear "I have my bags" text

Curbside timing is driven by the airport's rules. Newark's pick-up and drop-off rules reserve terminal curbs for active pickups. A vehicle may wait at the curb only when the passenger and bags are already outside; otherwise drivers wait in the free cell phone lot near the airport entrance, which the airport says is less than five minutes from all terminals. Your text tells your chauffeur when to move.

Staying safe in the arrivals hall

Large arrivals halls attract people offering rides. Newark's ground transportation page tells travelers to be careful of anyone who is not in an official uniform and offers transportation or luggage help, and points to uniformed staff at the Port Authority Information Center in each terminal's arrivals area. A few habits keep a pre-arranged pickup simple:

  • Your chauffeur contacts you by name, from the number in your confirmation.
  • Never get into a car because someone approaches you, even if they say they were sent for you.
  • Match the chauffeur's name and the vehicle with your confirmation before your bags go in.
  • If anything feels wrong, go to the Information Center desk and call us at (609) 598-2992.

International arrivals and delayed flights

After an international flight you clear passport control and customs and pick up your bags before you reach the public arrivals area. That can take a few minutes or much longer, depending on how many flights land together. The landing time is only the start, so text your chauffeur once you are through customs, not when the wheels touch down.

For delays, flight monitoring does the heavy lifting: if the airline changes your arrival time, we see it. If a bag is missing, file the report at your airline's baggage office before you leave the terminal, then let your chauffeur know you are running late. How waiting is handled is written into your quote before you book, so nobody is surprised at the curb.

Dropping off at EWR for a departure

Departures are simpler. Your chauffeur takes you to the departures curb of your airline's terminal, unloads your bags and you walk in. Check the terminal the day before, and again on the morning you fly.

The harder question is when to leave home. In its advisories for New York–area airports, TSA tells travelers to arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one. Our guide on how early to leave Mercer County for the airport turns that advice into a pickup time for your town and time of day.

Frequently asked questions

Where does my driver meet me at Newark Airport?

It depends on what you book. With meet & greet, available on request, your chauffeur waits inside the arrivals area of your terminal near baggage claim with a name sign. With a curbside pickup, you collect your bags, text your chauffeur and walk out to the arrivals curb, and the car pulls up. Either way, your chauffeur contacts you from the number in your confirmation.

How long does it take to get from Newark Airport to Princeton?

Princeton is about 40 miles from Newark Liberty by road, usually around 50–65 minutes without heavy traffic, mostly on the New Jersey Turnpike. Weekday rush hours, Friday afternoons, holiday weekends and bad weather can add a lot to that, so leave extra time if you are heading straight to a meeting or an event after you land.

Can a car wait at the curb at Newark Airport?

Only briefly. Newark's posted rules reserve terminal curbs for active pickups and drop-offs, and a vehicle may wait there only when the passenger and luggage are already outside. Otherwise drivers wait in the airport's cell phone lot until the passenger calls. That is why your chauffeur asks you to send a text as soon as you have your bags.

What happens if my flight into EWR is delayed?

We monitor your flight, so your chauffeur follows the updated arrival time rather than the original schedule. If the delay is long or the flight is canceled, we contact you to adjust the pickup. How wait time and changes are handled is stated in your written quote before you confirm, so you know the terms in advance.

Do I need the AirTrain if I book a car service at Newark?

No. AirTrain Newark links the terminals with parking, rental cars and the airport train station, but a car service drives straight to the arrivals area of your terminal, whether that is Terminal A, B or C. You only need the AirTrain if you are connecting to NJ Transit or Amtrak trains or changing terminals on your own.

Which terminal does my flight use at Newark?

Check your boarding pass or your airline's app on the day you travel. Newark has three terminals, A, B and C, and airline assignments can change. Include the terminal in the text you send your chauffeur when you land, and tell us right away if it changes, so your chauffeur is waiting at the right arrivals area.
